Polkadot co-founder Rob Habermeier published an analysis comparing off-chain zk coprocessors, respect to cryptoeconomic. An open debate when it comes to speak about blockchains scaling options.
Off-chain ZK coprocessors, lighten the calculations on the chain, but they have a subset of features. They are more expensive in computational terms, but they are easy deployable almost with near-zero price impact. This causes the ZK price/demand curve to look much like a flat line.
Cryptoeconomic coprocessors are hardware-bound of specific validators. The consensus systems relying on these non-substitutable nodes makes a potential bottleneck for the architecture.
1KX Research estimated a 6-order of difference in hardware cost to prove something, versus executing it. There is a threshold below which cryptoeconomic systems perform better. Given these considerations, there is still a lot of room for growth for Polkadot blockspace, remaining competitive in the market of validated computation.
